Mental health and anxiety during COVID-19

A pandemic can be stressful. With COVID 19 cases only increasing every day, strong emotions of fear and anxiety have filled the air as precautionary measures still stay in place. As overwhelming, the feelings of fear and uncertainty only add to increased stress and anxiety.  It is more prevalent with groups of people such as older adults, care providers and people with underlying health conditions.  There are many ways in which one can overcome these uncertain, unpredictable and unknown fears. If you are experiencing bouts of anxiety, fear and uncertainty read on further to understand ways in which you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

First things first, do not let any kind of negativity and hopelessness stop you from taking necessary actions to care for yourself. Mild anxiety can be beneficial to boost actions and achieve a favorable outcome. Excessive anxiety can make it difficult to think rationally and can also cause extreme stress. It is beneficial to understand what kind of behavior and emotions are normal and which should raise a red flag. We have put together some key pointers for you to overcome your negative emotions.

Be well informed

Do not fall for fake news or remedies that are doing the rounds, especially at this time. Limit the number of times that you check news or are on social media. Stay abreast with the happenings around you through reputable sources.

Stay Connected

The practice of social distancing means staying home and away from others as much as possible to help prevent spread of COVID-19. This does not mean you isolate yourself from family and friends. To avoid feeling anxious or depressed, always stay connected with your family and friends through phone, internet, video calls and messages for enhancing positive emotions.

Change focus and distract yourself

If there are certain aspects of your life that disturb you, like a job loss, isolation or any other negative thoughts running around your mind – change your focus and distract yourself. This could be doing something that you always wanted to learn like learning a language or instrument. Find simple sources of joy.

Maintain a healthy routine

Maintaining a healthy routine is an important self-care strategy. Participating in regular physical activities and exercise can help improve mood and reduce anxiety. Eating a well-balanced diet can keep your stress and anxiety in check. Avoid taking any sort of drugs unless prescribed by your doctor. Find time to relax and recharge as you set aside time for yourself. Practice breathing, yoga and meditation or any other activity you enjoy and be on it regularly.
