Be a beacon of hope for someone with depression or anxiety conditions

While we are technologically advancing with the latest gadgets, software, and applications. However, somewhere a lot of this is affecting our mental health. When one is diagnosed with depression or other mental disorders, it is not just them who undergo a rough patch but also their near and dear ones. When your dear ones are struggling with any mental disorder and undergoing any depression treatments, you might not know how to handle the situation which may lead to more confusion, frustration and anger. Sometimes, you will even feel the pressure of not knowing what words to use or might be afraid of upsetting them more. Depression is an extreme disorder where one often wishes to isolate themselves from the world that could sabotage your relationship with them. While depression is a daunting disorder more often seen among young adults, only less than 10% actually receive treatment and support from their families. A report released in 2018 by The World Health Organization suggested that more than 300 million worldwide suffer different variations of depression and anxiety disorders.

This blog will further enunciate the different ways you could help your near and dear ones while they are going a rough phase in their life.

Be there for them

Research projects that most of the depression victims find solace when their loved ones are just sitting along with them while they are pouring their heart out. Most of them consider this as one of the most effective ways of coping up with such conditions as this shows pure support, consideration and empathy. This also reassures their importance in the other person’s life.

Initiate small gestures

If you are confused on how to express your emotional side to a person in a poor mental condition, the best way to start this would be to do small gestures. May it be a small greeting card, or even as simple as a text message. This will build trust and a loving connection which gives them a beacon of light that will guide them during tough times.

Avoid baseless judgement or criticism

What you speak and express can have a powerful impact on your loved ones. Try avoiding using phrases such as “This is all in your head. Try looking at the positive side.” While you may not be insensitive, but it may look like you are not considerate towards their situations impacting your relationship with them.
